Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -2.44% swung to a third-quarter loss as the online retail giant’s stronger revenue was masked again by its aggressive spending to spur growth.
Shares fell 7.1% after hours to $206.79 as the company predicted downbeat fourth-quarter revenue and another potential operating loss. As of Thursday’s close, the stock was up 29% so far this year.
For the current quarter, the company predicted operating results from a profit of $310 million to a loss of $490 million, and revenue of $20.25 billion to $22.75 billion. The guidance includes approximately $290 million for stock-based compensation and amortization of intangible assets. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters most recently expected revenue of $22.79 billion.
